Winter Wonderland
I can't tell you all how excited I am that we're actually meeting for the first Pangaean round table retreat. I can scarce believe it, and at the same time I never had any doubt. First I must extend my personal thanks to Wright and Becky for their willingness and ability to host us all. Second, I must give my heartfelt thanks, admiration, and respect to our West Coasters who are willing to put forth the time energy and money to make this happen. Your commitment to our project makes me really happy and excited.
Now then. I see this thread as an excitement sharing planning forum for our upcoming get together. That said, if people only have time to check and post to one thread in the upcoming weeks, I think that this should be it, for this is all leading towards a concrete actuality that draws ever closer on the horizon.
While I see the main purpose of our time together as an opportunity to have fun, laugh, bond, and generally enjoy one another's company, I'd also like it to be as productive artistically and Pangaeanly as possible. I think one way that everyone can get the most out of our time is by introducing others to something that's important to us personally, sharing a practice or a piece of literature with the group. So, I invite you all to share your enticing ideas here that we might begin to construct a bit of a framework for the weekend.
Here follow my desires at present, subject to change during the course of the month.
i) I'd like this weekend to be separate from our everyday lives, really about the group and our time together. For me this translates to turning off cellphones and leaving e-mail behind during our time together.
ii) I would like to cook and take meals together. Perhaps we can go shopping for supplies together, and then a couple of people can plan and be "in charge" of each meal, while the others help keep them entertained and help with the cleanup.
iii) I would like our time to be generative of concrete artifacts for the blog and the furtherance of Pangaea's physical reality. This documentation might include video, photos, writings, sound recordings, and artwork.
iv) I would like each person to bring a text to share aloud. It can be self-written or published, longer or shorter, a short story or a poem or a piece of theatre, but it should have some particular resonance with the person sharing it. I'd like to spend at least one evening, and perhaps a portion of each evening reading aloud to one another and sharing these. Preferably this would take place around a fireplace, but a candle will suffice should a fireplace be absent.
v) I would like to share some "theatre" practices with everyone, which will require one significant block of time. Say between 3 and 5 hours. I don't want anyone to get nervous. Any practice that I introduce is only an invitation, and if anyone feels uncomfortable, they are willing to step out at any time. That said, the practices that I have in mind are not specific to theatre, they're more focused on different ways of perceiving our bodies, the world, and those around us. No prior experience is necessary, only a willingness to try and to commit.
vi) I would like to have at least one "formal" sit down discussion about Pangaea that would include someone taking notes for future reference. As this is the first time we've all been together, it's opportune for exchanging ideas and generating material much more quickly than we've been able to do on the blog.
I'm sure this is more than enough for one post. I don't want to impose my desires too much on our time, but these are the things that came to mind. I would appreciate it if you all would respond to these suggestions with objections, approvals, and ideas to take them further. Most importantly, I look forward to hearing all your ideas as there are a million possibilities for our time together.

Hello my preciouses,
I am so glad to be back. I posted one comment on the money-making thread but I am still catching up with all of your wonderful blogging that's been happening and I imagine it might take a little while.
Buuuut, I am so so so excited that you are all coming and I just wanted to let you know how happy and grateful I am to have you all in my life. What a good thing this is!
My suggestions so far for the weekend is
1) have single or pairs of people sign up for meals. I can make a run to the co-op earlier in the week or we can do a group thing friday morning. I will write-up a meal schedule and email it directly. I'll also include a large, medium, small option so we don't end up overdoing it.
2) have group activities that can center on pure bonding. Like, saturday morning half of us go on a hike and the other half goes to a yoga class. or something like that. something that doesn't have to be art related.
3) have presentations. so for example, a lot of my art work will be here so i'd love to have a little critique of it. please bring slides, tapes, drafts, pictures, recordings of your work as well.
4) talk about possible uses for our awesome empty barn. Like maybe we can set up a silkscreening room out there that we could use at future retreats? (btw, i've been looking at super duper awesome silkscreen set ups on ebay for like 5 grand)
ok, i will be sending out emails soon with more details about the retreat. and slowly but surely i will catch up with the otehr fine blogs as well.
ta ta for now (or as randersaur would say ta-tas are forever)

Patrick! Sourdough Starter! You, me and everyone we know! Ok, maybe you don't actually know that many people that would be excited and inspired by a good batch of starter but don't underestimate yourself, my friend. Since the beginning of my yeast-free diet I have been troubled by the apparant failure of my first sourdough starter and would love your advice. Cooking for me is a very artful and perhaps spiritual endeavor as it relates to my health and my wellbeing. I do not really differentiate between the kinds of thoughts that go into what I make to put in my body versus what I make to put out into the world (ie art making). So, that said, would you be willing to have a session in the kitchen to talk and experiment with food, nutrition, and other food-related things as we see them in Pangaea?
Hey G'aeans,
I'm very pleased by all your suggestions. Just to check in as to my thought's progression and a few questions, here we go.
I like the idea of a group trip to the market on Friday morning to procure supplies.
Wright, count me in for the AA meeting on Sunday morning.
Rachel, I hear you about organicity. I'd like to let things grow as naturally as possible, though I'd also like to get as many ideas out there as possible, not that I think there'll be any dearth of things to do.
I add a couple of questions followed by suggestions.
Is there a decently sized space for yoga and theatre exercises. The barn comes to mind, but I imagine it'll be colder than a well-digger's elbow. A large living room we can move the furniture out of?
What's the music situation? Is there a stereo we can pump some tunes through? In addition to readings, I think it'd be fun to share some music with each other for close listenings.
I think it'd be nice if we each brought a gift for each of the others. Doesn't have to be anything elaborate or expensive, but a little gesture would be fun.
Charisma Nipples....'nuff said.
I'd like to build a big sculpture outdoors.
Polar Bearing? Is there water? Yeah, I'm crazy like that.
Photoshoot with Becky for portraits of each of us. Yeah.
Okay, that is much much. Yay, yay!
Looking ever forward.

Croth,
Are you freakin' serious?!! That's amazing..both the offer with Boytano and the fact that you turned it down. Wow, I am reeling with the feeling. You would have been sorely missed in VT this December, but I for one would have totally understood. Brian Boytano! Woah. Can you at least maybe get an autograph?
Ok, so you've heard about pooing and you've heard about shitting, but have you heard of liquid diarrheaing with excitement? well, now you have.
here is a loose like a prostitue on acid schedule for our retreat. this is really just to show you what i have been thinking the weekend will look like. mainly, large chunks of time devoted to different activities, but not necessarily micromanaged. i've taken everyone's ideas into account and think there's a place for everything to happen. let me know what you guys think.
also, if everyone likes this schedule i will make a different sign up sheet for activities, and meals.
peace in the middle east
b
Becks,
I'm really glad that you put out the schedule. This is great. I'm also glad it's loose. It's just nice to have a general shape to things, with lots of wiggle room. I will be hoping to sign up for a couple of things by the end of today.
A couple of thoughts off the bat, though. Could we move the G'aeans of America meeting to Saturday night or Sunday? Toby is going to try to get there on Friday eve or earlier on Saturday, but there's no guarantee he can get out of work, and it would be great to have him there.
Also, I'd like to put the AA meeting on the list for Sunday morning. I for one am interested in going, and I think it would be interesting/beneficial for all who are intrerested to see how another community is run, and to get a glimpse into an organization that is very much a part of Wright's life.
I'm a little confused as to the s,m,L, options with regards to meals. Does this mean if we only eat a snack for breakfast, we check small, and if we gorge ourselves on suckling pigs we check large?
I am very interesting in seeing your work. However, this may be difficult for many of us, as we either don't have a beautiful portfolio like yourself, can't transport stuff, make ephemeral art like theatre, or haven't made anything for a while. I'd like to extend the conception of show and tell to include sharing about the things we value in art and life, the work of other artists we admire, or the sharing of particular skills or crafts that others might not be familiar with.
Okay, I'm off. But one last thing... should I e-mail you with my scheduling ideas or post them on the blog?
tacfs
p.s. Yay for this meeting! Yay for Pangeae, and yay for Volcanic diarrhea!
p.p.s. I just realized that Pangaea and diarrhea rhyme. That is unfortunate.
the dizza on the schizza:
1) Meeting #1 is now on Saturday night
2) Meeting #2 will now be on Sunday morning after the AA Meeting
3) Secretaries will be picked at the time of the meetings.
4) Show N' Tell will also include talking about your artistic ideas if showing actual things is impossible or doesn't make sense with the kind of art you make.
5) Activities slots will be signed up for on the blog. Here are some guidelines that might make it easier for me to organize all y'alls brilliant ideas.
a) only sign up for one or two things at a time.
yes, tyler, i know you're an eager beaver. i just
want to make sure i don't miss anything, and
also that everyone has a chance to sign up.
b) be specific about when you want your activity
to be and how long you think it will last. if
you have no preference give a few
suggestions and I'll fit you in. The activities
very well might not fit the time slots or
happen quite as planned and that's alright
too.
c) check the blog first to see what other people
have signed up for and when.
6) Quiet time will be taken by whoever, whenever, on an as needed basis. We could also schedule a quiet time so the house can rest. What do you guys think?
7) Please sign up for meals on the blog either alone or with a friend. The s,m,L is a way for you to let us know if you're planning on making a small meal, medium meal, or large meal (but you don't have to tell anyone what you're making). this is just so we don't go overboard on food (i can't eat three large meals in a day). If this is a dumb idea we can get rid of it. I won't be offended.
8) Please post dietary and environmental needs on the blog. If you do not feel comfortable with this you can send them to me and I'll make a master anonymous list or something. An example for myself might be: I enjoy only eating organic food and if you wake me up before 8 I will punch you in the face. The first is true, the latter is not. I just couldn't think of anything better at the moment. Also, I don't expect everyone to cater to my funky dietary needs, I just want to put it out there.
9) Feel free to veto any or all of these ideas. I don't want to control the flow of the whole weekend, I just want to be more of a secretary. For me having a clear idea of at least what the plan is, is a real comfort, whether or not it actually ends up happening that way.

A few more little details to continue fleshing out the weekend.
Arrival:
Roach and I (The NY crew) will arrive in Albany by train shortly before Patrick and Croth. Say 10p.m. I'm not sure there's a train coming in at that exact time, but they're pretty frequent, so we should be close.
Departure:
Roach and I are on the same flight out as Patrick and Croth. 3:25 on Monday. Convenient, eh?
Add to Schedule.
Mon: Just before we take my bed outside to hose it off, we'll all hold Becky's hands as we collectively extract the large spiky object from her rectal cavity. I think it's a pineapple, but we won't know for certain until Monday.
I would like to sign up for two three hour slots. Saturday and Sunday from 3-6 p.m. for theatre based exercises and exploration. We may run slightly past 6, but we may also work cooking and eating into the activities. These activities will commence with yoga and breathing exercises. I hope all will participate, for it's important to have a certain mass of people for these things. I'm willing to shift times if necessary.
Wright, what time do you go to work on Monday? I think it would be nice to have some sort of closing activity while everyone is still present.
Okay, things are good and gooder here. Off to work some more on the novel.

Rachel,
I hear what you're saying, and the last thing I want to do is impose a burden on anyone or try to get people to do something that they're not interested in doing. Thus, if the general consensus is that two three hour slots is too much, I'm happy (well certainly willing) to forego one or the other of them.
The above said, the type of work that I have in mind requires significant chunks of time. Ideally I would like to do 4 or five hour chunks. I know that sounds like a lot, but it's totally doable, and in fact, the duration helps the work.
Keep in mind that each three hour chunk includes at least an hour of warm up with yoga and breathing exercises, as well as frequent spaces for discussion. Also bear in mind that an essential part of the work is not doing, but only observing, and that each exercise is only an invitation. If someone is feeling over taxed, they can sit out.
Furthermore, the work that I would like to present is only tangentially theatre based. I think that many of the exercises either explicitly or implicitly have significant resonances in other disciplines, music, art, dance, the art of observation, and interpersonal relations.
One further thing: I think that some of this work could be very beneficial to your upcoming directing project as you've described it to me.
So, how about this? We do a session on Saturday and see how it goes. I'll try to fill it with as many interesting things as possible, without shortchanging any of them (this is something that I'm currently struggling with, as every group moves at different paces and has different interests) then we can discuss further after the Saturday session. If people are in to another session, we can do it, if not, we can drop it.
I hope for the former option, as i see potential for some really amazing interactions to take place, but I'm no dictator.
Best,
tacfs
p.s. one other reason for desiring two sessions is that I hoped to develop the skills and exercises explored on day one into an impromptu group performance on day two. This could be a very cool thing to film, photograph, write about or sound record.
Folks,
Had a very nice talk with the Bone last night. Sounds as though we may be able to combine some of our performance/observationally minded interests. Two concerns for both of us are space and domination.
In terms of space, I'm curious as to the size of the lovely, unfurnished living room? Ample room for frolicking and perhaps unrolling large bolts of cloth? Would the barn be a possible space if we all bundled up? What's the out of doors like? Very rural and not much distraction, or cars and dogs coming by at all hours?
In terms of domination, I think that we are both sensitive to the possibility of theatre/performance related endeavors to predominate, and we don't want this to happen. We acknowledge that not everyone at Pangaea is primarily a performer, and we don't want anyone to feel excluded or pressured to be included. That said, I think we both feel that we have some very interesting and fun activities that center around performance and creativity, though there are a number of approaches and means of getting involved. I also think the idea of a final group performance (not to worry, as I envision it, it has a very loose but rewarding framework, and no one gets put on the spot) is a very tantalizing idea.
I would like to sign up to cook one and maybe even two breakfasts, or a breakfast and a lunch on Friday and Saturday. Let's say Lunch Friday and Breakfast Saturday. I'm not quite the cuisinier that some of us are, but I do a fair job of preparing delightful daytime repasts.
Croth, I am interested in learning how to darn socks/sweaters, and how I might repair some holes in the armpits of a couple of t-shirts. It's hard for me to think of sewing projects that would be completable in the time we'll have without a sewing machine(s) and good access to fabric, but I am interested in making pillows, and maybe a simple tote bag. I also have some ideas for clothing modification that might be doable.
I think I'll have my keyboard with me, which connects to my laptop, but I won't have much in the way of speakers...is there a stereo that I might connect to?
Are there other instruments? If so, great. If not, we'll hoot and holler and bang on some pots and pans. Like Toby mentioned, I think that music making would be a blast. I was just laughing to myself the other day over a recollection of Wright's amazingly brilliant extemporé rendition of a song entitled "I've got a Big Fat Dick," which he busted out from the back seat of my car on the way to San Jose to pick up Pryor Power some months ago. It was rad.
Speaking of, Wrighteous my brother, where you at lover? Love to hear your sweet sweet voice in the days to come.
Okay, all for now. Big ol' smooches to youches.

Ok, whew! So much to say, I'm getting dry mouth just thinking about it. I will try to break this down a little so as not to be too confusing.
Exciting news first:
1.
The Croth and I are going to teach a workshop on stenciling and applique, crafting, and how we can all work towards a better Vermont chic style. What this will look like is first we will make stencils of animals, hunters, cornucopias of Vermont delight or whatever else your heart fancies. Then we will use the stencils to trace our own patches out of cloth as well as use them to spraypaint in inappropriate places around our house. Theeeeen, we will cut out our patches and sew them onto teeshirts, sweatshirts, bags, bums, whatever you choose to decorate. You will be encouraged to use colors like bright orange and hunter green. Plaid is always welcomed but may be mocked. Afterwards we will all strut around and show off our new duds. This can happen in the 12-2 slot on Saturday, but is supper flexible. If we have more activities then we can handle we can always break into two groups (especially if you really hate sewing for example). Also we only have one sewing machine so we might have to be creative with how we use it.
Anyhoo, what you will need to bring is:
-Clothing that you want to sew on, something you
enjoy wearing but don't mind altering
-Cloth that you want to use to make patches. This can be anything from old socks to some cool pattern you found at the goodwill. (we will have some stuff but not a huge selection)
- eastcoasters only: if you have an exacto knife, please bring it!
2. Let me clarify about our house. We have two floors. Downstairs is a large kitchen connected to a large dining room maybe 10X15 feet. This is connected to a larger living room about 10X20 feet. Hardwood. And we have no furniture yet so unless IKEA figures out how to get to e. dorset we're all eating on the floor. Well, we actually have one folding table on loan. ok, but both these rooms will be good for frolicking and they are so open they could really be considered one room. Then there is Wright's reading room which is the only spot in the house that's carpeted. This might be good for sleeping??? Upstairs is our room and a guest room (also sleeping) and then my studio. My studio is actually two rooms slightly smaller then the downstairs. One of the room used to be an attic so it has that annoying yet charming slanted ceiling. In this room is a little room that used to be a storage space but can actually fit a mattress pad and makes quite a cozy and private room for that special individual. These rooms can house most of the crafting, seeing as they are already full of, well, crafts.
Outside we have a barn but it's kinda narly. We could definitely do an activity in there if it's not butt cold but I wouldn't want to sit on the ground. And it smells like moth balls. We also have a yard. We have neighbors but everyone kinda minds their own business. And yes we have a stereo and lots of music. And an electric guitar. And a small drum. And several pots.
3.
Ok, here's a list of my strange and unexplainable eating habits. This might be useful in deciding what to cook. Especially for the Stam because I heard you might teach a cooking class?
I don't eat:
non-organics (if possible)
white flour
refined sugar incl. white and brown
commercial yeast
things that are terribly acidic like orange juice
I don't want to stop someone from doing what they need to do, but it'd be great if we didn't have a class that was all about making sugary fudge and white bread. or a meal like that or something. I use a lot of alternatives that I have at the house so if this will be a problem let's talk. I'm totally willing to get whatever we need to make your creation happen! Also, I'm sure this is obvious, but no booze either.
3. What to bring you might ask?
-Bring warm cloths and boots cuz it might be snowy and snowball fights will be used to settle any major disputes.
- Slippers!!! Duh!!
-your favorite comfort object.
As for bedding we have a queen sized aeromattress which is fantastic and a mattress pad that comfortablly fits one and uncomfortably fits two. We may have another bed but more on that later. That means that at least two people will need to bring sleeping bags and pillows. Y'all can figure it out. And I'll let you know if we actually get that extra bed.
I think that's it. Sorry for blathering on. I'm am so uber excited. It's gonna be splendid. Oh yes, and I almost forgot. I'm making oatmeal and chai on Friday morning, early style.
peace
b
Croth,
The thong is fine, great in fact. I don't think it needs an adjustment, but I would like to make a pare of leather hot pants. Preferably a bright color. Perhaps you could bring a few of the bigger scraps. Might they also be good for applique? I can bring a somewhat crappy pair of scissors, and also a huge long roll of brown paper I lifted from a construction site.
Wright, where do you work?
Toby, do you have sleeping stuff for two perhaps? I have very little over here, and don't really want to bring it cross country either.
W and B, thanks for the description of the spaces. Yabbidy...upstairs craftering sounds great. Yay also for chai and oatmail.

sinclizzle
ouch. hot stuff. you burn me. all i want for christmas is your hot beef injection.
Yes, um, so, eh hem, anyway. For food we will make a Friday am trip to the Co-op where they have organic peppers and organic fed beef. Their selection of produce is changing so I can't promise that they will have the particular peppers you mentioned. They will probably have the best selection of any other stores though.
As for my food things. I don't eat refined, bleached white flour, which is really just wheat flour that has been processed. I try to stay away from whole-wheat flour too but am flexible on this note. Organic, unbromated flour really is better for you. Alternatives like spelt or rice flour are even better. Don't get me wrong, I have been known to stray from my special diets, especially when I go out to eat or on vacation, but when it's in the house, and can be prevented, then I try to stick to it.
For sugar I don't eat white sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, fructose, "raw" sugar, evaporated cane juice, or sucanat. Again, I do stray, but in the case that Patrick, you want to do a whole activity focused around white sugar, I would probably have a hard time. I'm kinda like a sweets addict, so think about it that way. Like I want sugar all the time so it's best to just stay away from it. Some alternatives might be maple syrup, honey, barley malt, brown rice syrup, fruit juice, and stevia-- all of which work well for cooking. Some ideas for desserts? Fruit based desserts, and cookies with substitutions. At the moment I'm kinda addicted to grain sweetened chocolate chips.
And no, I'm definitely not a vegetarian. Anyone else?
Also, here's an activity/ meals update.
1. There's a small chunk of time on Friday before lunch that I'd like to have to share work if possible. I'd love to have some feedback about my own work and discuss what I'm doing right now if anyone's interested. It seems that most can't bring too much for show and tell so this could be short, like one hour, 1-2.
2. I pushed back breakfast time on Friday to accomadate our brave and sleepy travelers. However, because the co-op takes up a good chunk of time I want to get out early. Perhaps half of us who are less sleepy can go to the co-op allowing others to sleep in?
3. The activity slots that are still open are
Friday: 3-7
Saturday: 10-12
Sunday: 12-2
4. The meal slots that are still open are
Friday: dinner
Saturday: lunch, dinner
Sunday: breakfast, lunch
5. SIGN UP BIZNAYNAYS! (Randerbone- i'd love to cook a meal with you, let's chat!)
6. If I've messed something up or missed sometihng let me know. I'll send out a final copy of the schedule once it's filled.
7. There's nothing else. I just like the number seven. fo'shizza.
take it light

P.S. Our Kombucha mushroom is taking a long time to get here!!! Please bring Kombucha from the west coast! I will love you forever!!! I will massage your bunyions when you're old! I will lick your boots clean before you put them on! Even if they have dog shit on them! And then I will drink the Kombucha and it will mix with the taste of dog shit and then...
Hot Carl, hot chili bun bun meat sauce 'cross my cheek..how sweet!
Vegemetarian?!! Schnaw dawg, you know I eat it, bald or hairy.
I would like to sign up to cook a meal with Wright. When, I don't know. What, I'm open. You let me know big boy. I wanna flour fight. (which we'll clean up of course.)
Couple a things:
Becky, I wanna sign up for a photoshoot for my Pangaea portrait. Whenever is most convenient for you is fine.
I think we should also get a few group shots.
If I bring da old fashioned film, what kind do you like to use? Or do you have the fatty digital?
I should also like to include a polar-bearing mission on the schedule. Early one morning. Perhaps Sunday? Optional of course, but highly recommended.
Schweet!!!! This is the proverbial carrot, and I need da shits right now.
Tyler,
I'm having second doubts about the photoshoot. I've been thinking a lot about Wright's suggestion about structuring our group like AA. I kinda like the idea of Pangaea being a force in itself and our individual personalities not being as important. Like maybe we could always stay anonymous within the group and let the group be kinda one consciousness (as perceived by the outside world).
whaddya think?
uh, gee. wow guys. i miss you all! have fun!
